Coordinator's Corner Weekly Announcements

Weekly Announcements (August 18-22):

Quote of the Week: “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” ~Plato, The Republic

Coordinator’s Message: Welcome back, Corebabies!  I hope you your summer was one of fun, rest, and reflection and that you are ready to begin anew this year. Thank you for your patience and understanding this week as we are all figuring out MISIS.  When you see them, please thank Ms. Howe and Ms. Morales for their tireless efforts these last few weeks.  Though all schedules perfect, they were far further along than the stories I have heard from around the district.  Schedule changes will continue this week as our counselors continue to ensure you are all properly placed and that classes are balanced.

The MISIS CRISIS  aside, I am very excited for this year.  We have many new faces joining our teaching teams.  Ms. Dillisi, Ms. Pariser, Mr. Cecil, and Mr. Loconte have joined the ninth grade.  Ms. Peroff has joined the tenth grade team.  Mr. Basinger, though not a new face, has joined the twelfth grade team, as has Mr. Cecil.  Mr. McDonnell and Ms. Sork have joined our science team.  Did I mention that three of our four new CORE teachers are former students?  That makes twelve– twelve of our twenty-nine Magnet teachers are former students.  That’s unheard of and speaks to the power of our montra, “There’s no place like CORE!” We also have a new principal, Ms. Cindy Duong, a veteran teacher and Assistant Principal at Cleveland High School, who despite the business of her new position will continue teaching her AP English Language class.  Good for you, Ms. Duong!

Each grade level has been working hard all summer to provide you with an exciting and fulfilling curriculum.  Now you must do your part to develop the habits for success. There are many theories about what those habits are, but my suggestions include staying organized, establishing peer groups that encourage you to be your BEST self, being proactive, asking for help when you need it, enjoying the learning process, and making connections.  Your teachers, counselors, and I are here to assist you, so utilize the resources available, and have your best year yet!

Lunch Applications:  In order to attend CORE field trips, you MUST complete a Title I lunch application.  Even if you don’t think you will qualify or don’t want to receive tickets, you still must complete an application.  We suggest completing it online, if you haven’t already.  Click HERE for instructions.  Print your confirmation form and bring it to the Magnet Office.

Student ID Pictures:  Student ID pictures will be taken on Tuesday, August 19th and Wednesday, August 20th.  Ninth and tenth graders will be taking pictures during PE on Wednesday, juniors will be taking the picture during CORE on Tuesday, and seniors will be taking pictures through Digital Humanities on Tuesday.   Also, you can purchase a picture package.  You should have received details from your Per. 2 teacher or you can go to the Magnet Office to pick up the flyer.

Early Dismissal Tuesday:  The next Early Dismissal Tuesday will be Tuesday, August 19th at 1:34 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

Book Bundles:  There are still 9th and 11th Grade Book Bundles available.  Having your own copy of the books we are using  is an invaluable tool and all proceeds go back to the program. Come to the Magnet Office for an order form.

No School: Remember that Friday, August 29th and Monday, September 1st there is no school in observance of Admissions Day and Labor Day.

Practice, Practice, Practice:  Our 2013-2014 College Admissions Initiative is in full force and kicks off with the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 8:00 a.m.  Because we are a college preparatory program, we highly recommend all freshmen take the exam, and we require all juniors to take the exam as part of the CORE 11 curriculum. All sophomores take the exam free of charge through the LAUSD.  The cost for freshmen and juniors is $15.00, and you can sign-up in the Magnet Office or Student Store during Nutrition and Lunch beginning September 3rd.  There are also fee waivers available for students in the Free and Reduced Lunch program. If you think you qualify, please see Ms. Drell in the College Office.

Clean Up After Yourselves:  Please do your part to keep your learning environment and other areas on campus clean.  Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same! I do not want see your trash left on the floors for someone else to clean up. Thank you!
