Coordinator’s Message: This week, I want to talk about decisions, and what you need to consider when you make them. As you grow older, the consequences of decisions you make became increasingly LESS temporary and MORE severe. Think about the decisions you made in elementary school. Even if it was a bad one, the penalty and the lasting effects were short-lived. By the end of the week, all was usually right with the world. In middle school, good and bad decisions began to tile the path of your life and reputations formed based on those decisions. Now, here you are, and the decisions you make are what separate you from the rest. Saying yes or no becomes “the difference between the path you walk and the one you leave behind.” Have you decided to dedicate yourself to your education? Have you decided to focus on your social life? Have you decided to be friends with people that bring out the best in you? Have you decided to associate with those that bring you down? Have you decided to bring others down? Have you decided to consume yourself with social media in unhealthy ways? Have you decided to partake in risky behaviors?
The decisions you make now are the decisions that you will take with you, whether you want to or not. And sometimes, the consequences live forever. There is a way out, however. Before saying yes or no, think about the worst possible consequence and ask yourself: Am I committed to allowing this decision to define me? Am I committed to living with the consequences forever? When I think it is behind me, will I be alright if it is resurrected? Your goal should be to have the power to say yes or no as often as you can, because only you have the power to make the right decision. And remember, we as adults are willing to help!

Magnet Parents Association: The next MPA meeting of the year will be THIS Wednesday, November 19th at 7:00 p.m. in E10. Please encourage your parents to stay “in the loop” and attend this very important meeting. Ms. Howe will be our guest speaker for the evening. All parents welcome!

Mock SAT/ACT: On December 6th from 9:00am – 1:00pm there will be a mock SAT and ACT hosted by Revolution Prep. Taking the exams is a great way to figure out which exam is best for your personal testing style. Please sign up for one or the other, not both. ATTENTION Seniors: The Ephebian Society recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to CHS and the community during high school. Free Speech Contest: High school juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in FIRE’s annual essay contest. To enter. students must submit an essay between 800-1000 on a prompt. The Princeton Prize: Princeton University is sponsoring an annual awards program for high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations.If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or community, we want to hear from you. An Exciting Opportunity from MIT: The first of its kind on a national scale, INSPIRE, a new national research competition in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, organized by MIT students exclusively for high school students enables students to showcase and present original research in one of thirteen fields, ranging from anthropology to music, economics, and philosophy. Expert judges will award prizes for the most outstanding work in each category. You are invited to participate by submitting entries and competing for awards. The final round of the competition will be held at MIT’s campus in Cambridge, MA from April 7-9, 2015. You can find information regarding deadlines, eligibility criteria, and the application itself on their website getinspired.mit.edu. The first deadline, for abstract submission, is on January 7, 2015.
Having Trouble in Your Classes?: You are not alone; there is tutoring available! The Boys and Girls Club of the West Valley is offering free tutoring Monday-Thursday in our school library from 3:00-5:00 pm. They also offer college admissions workshops. One of the tutors is a CORE alumnus. Come to the Magnet Office to pick up the registration paperwork.

Forgot Your Corebaby Email Password?: You can retrieve it, but it will cost you a dollar. Go to Mr. Saavedra in E7 for information, but don’t go empty handed.
Clean Up After Yourselves: Please do your part to keep your learning environment and other areas on campus clean. Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same! I do not want see your trash left on the floors for someone else to clean up. Thank you!
