Weekly Announcements (February 1 – 5):

Coordinator’s Message: February is Black History Month and National Magnet Schools Month. I do not think this is a coincidence. Magnet schools began in the late 1960s in the United States as a response to the unwillingness of many to integrate Black and White students after the 1954 landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. the Board of Education. There were many attempts at mandating school integration. The Little Rock 9 and Ruby Bridges are some of the courageous Black students who were the first to integrate White schools. In fact, our own Ms. Donna Hill was the first African American to integrate her all-White Catholic school. These attempts, however, unwittingly pushed White parents who feared sending their children to school with students of color to move to the suburbs to escape such efforts, thus re-segregating schools. There was an alternative proposed– to encourage voluntary integration by creating schools with specialized curriculum that would attract students based on their interests, thus bringing together diverse populations of students that can learn with and from one another. Hence, in 1981, Cleveland High School’s Humanities Magnet was born, and for 35 years, has been a marker of educational excellence both for its specialized curriculum and for its diversity. I am proud to carry on the legacy of inclusion and integration and strive to continue these efforts not just in speech, but in practice.

Get others hyped by adding your comments to the “Countdown to COREchella” Facebook and Instagram posts for your chance to win tickets to COREchella 2016. Get ready to make history by adding your voice to the hottest concert of the year!
Want to see Your Name in Lights?: Auditions for COREchella 2016, the greatest benefit concert of all time, are taking place on Saturday, February 27th. Click HERE to submit your applications. All applications must be submitted by Friday, February 16th at 11:59 PM. Don’t miss out on your 15 minutes of fame!
Create this year’s COREchella design: Are you an artist or have an eye for design? Create this year’s COREchella design and you could see your name in lights! Submit your ORIGINAL design to jmacon@corebaby.org by February 9th! The WINNER will receive: 2 Tickets to CORECHELLA; An official concert T-shirt; Your design printed on all CORECHELLA merchandise and featured in the design elements of the event! Be sure to sign your name on the bottom right hand corner of the design. Submissions must include NAME, GRADE, PERIOD 2, and Small Learning Community. The winning design will be chosen based on the following criteria: 1) Event relevance, 2) Cost effectiveness, 3) Fan vote, 4) Appeal to a broad audience, 5) Print quality (how the design will translate on to merchandise). Early Dismissal Tuesday: The next early dismissal Tuesday, February 9th. Please plan accordingly.
College Night for Freshmen and Sophomores: College Night for Freshmen and Sophomores is Tuesday, February 16th at 6:00 pm in the MPR (please note that this is a change from the original date of January 21st). Though you may think that college is just a glint in your eye, you need to begin preparing. Attending this important event can point you in that direction. Learn what you should be doing now to compete to be admitted to the colleges of your choice.
AN OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITY FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS!: Attention sophomores and juniors, Stanford University hosts a summer institute for high school students interested in the Humanities. It is a great opportunity to showcase your critical thinking skills and terrific foundation in the Humanities. The online application early submission deadline is February 3rd and the regular submission deadline is March 2nd. Go HERE for information and to apply. Financial aid is available. You are qualified for this program; don’t let the opportunity slip away!
Flu Season: Staying healthy this flu season is particularly important to all of us, especially me! Please do your part to keep yourself and our community healthy by doing the following:
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue (tiredness), vomiting and diarrhea, please stay home.
- The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
- While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. Please avoid the Magnet Office if this is the case.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand wipes. In fact, keep them in your back pack.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
- The CDC strongly recommends getting a flu shot, if possible.
- Also, please avoid the Magnet Office if you are sick. Thank you!
COREture: Winter is coming! (for all my Game of Thrones fans) Get your COREture gear– T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts– and don’t forget our new water bottles (in three colors) and the new zipped hoody! All proceeds go to the program!
Writer’s Block: Cleveland High School’s “Writer’s Block” is seeking art submissions for their Spring issue. Send their submissions to thewritersblockcleveland@gmail.com or bring them to F5.
Get Lit: Do you spit…poetry that is? If you are interested in trying out for our award-winning spoken word team, see Ms.Kurnick in F5 Cleveland’s Get Lit Slam Team will be having their Poetry Slam on February 25th for all individuals who want to try out for the team. Each student MUST see Ms. Kurnick in F5 for details of what is required of them to compete.
Le Sabre Online: Did you know you can read our school newspaper online? Go to www.lesabre.org to see what our fabulous journalism staff has to say about what’s happening in the world and on our campus.
Book Bundles: There are still 9th, 11th, and 12th grade Book Bundles available. Having your own copy of the books we are using is an invaluable tool and all proceeds go back to the program. Come to the Magnet Office for an order form.

Corebaby Email: Be sure to check your Corebaby email address EVERYDAY for important updates! If you use another email address as your primary email address, you can forward your Corebaby emails to that address so that you don’t miss anything! See Mr. Saavedra if you have questions.
Forgot Your Corebaby Email Password?: You can retrieve it, but it will cost you a dollar. Go to Mr. Saavedra in E7 for information, but don’t go empty-handed.

Important College News for All: Have you visited the Career and College Office website? It is an incredibly useful resource as you begin the college admissions journey in the ninth grade. Be sure to bookmark the calendar as there are important dates to note. Go to https://www.careerandcollegeoffice.org/ to check it out.
Clean Up After Yourselves: Please do your part to keep your learning environment and other areas on campus clean. Pick up your trash, recycle where possible, and remind your friends to do the same! I do not want see your trash left on the floors for someone else to clean up. Thank you!
